Serenity at the Workplace: Recommended Songs to Boost Your Spirit
by Emma • Mon, 22 Jul 2019 05:56AM

The beat turns up and employees are enjoying the song while working on their desks. Some sing and some even dance lightly on their chairs. What about you? What do you do when listening to a song played in your office?
What can music do to an individual?
It is widely known that music brings a great impact on our happiness and serenity depending on the kind of music we listen to. According to some psychologists and neuroscientists, listening to music can release dopamine in our brains. Dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter in the brain that is responsible for tangible pleasures such as motivation, reward, arousal, or reinforcement. When listening to music, dopamine is associated with chills and physical change in heart rate, breathing, or temperature. That is why when you hear certain music, you will likely feel shivers or goosebumps rising on your skin.

Another piece of study also found that our favourite songs, be it a power rock anthem or a soulful acoustic ballad, bring great impact to our emotional response. Valorie Salimpoor, the neuroscientist who conducted the study, monitored his volunteers’ brains during the survey. The result is that multiple brain regions were activated by music such as nucleus accumbens which is believed to be responsible for pleasant surprises or positive prediction error. It concludes that listening to songs could help you become more productive and happy.
