Serenity at the Workplace: Recommended Songs to Boost Your Spirit

The beat turns up and employees are enjoying the song while working on their desks. Some sing and some even dance lightly on their chairs. What about you? What do you do when listening to a song played in your office?

What can music do to an individual?

It is widely known that music brings a great impact on our happiness and serenity depending on the kind of music we listen to. According to some psychologists and neuroscientists, listening to music can release dopamine in our brains. Dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter in the brain that is responsible for tangible pleasures such as motivation, reward, arousal, or reinforcement. When listening to music, dopamine is associated with chills and physical change in heart rate, breathing, or temperature. That is why when you hear certain music, you will likely feel shivers or goosebumps rising on your skin.

Another piece of study also found that our favourite songs, be it a power rock anthem or a soulful acoustic ballad, bring great impact to our emotional response. Valorie Salimpoor, the neuroscientist who conducted the study, monitored his volunteers’ brains during the survey. The result is that multiple brain regions were activated by music such as nucleus accumbens which is believed to be responsible for pleasant surprises or positive prediction error. It concludes that listening to songs could help you become more productive and happy.

Song recommendations

So, as a song lover, what do you think is a good song? What songs do you like to listen at work? The answer to these questions might vary from one person to another. Therefore, we recommend some songs that, according to science, have a greater impact on your happiness and emotion.

Africa by Toto

Science analysis nominated Toto’s classical music to be the number one hit song ever. David Poeppel, professor of psychology and neural science at New York University, cited that Toto is a remarkably good and sophisticated song according to musicians.

Weightless by Marconi Union

If you are looking for a song to boost your wellbeing and reduce stress, Marconi Union music is probably the best choice. A study proved that Marconi Union’s music titled Weightless can reduce stress and anxiety by 65 percent.

Someone Like You by Adele

Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ is arranged carefully. Scientists said that harmony shifts and the lyrics of this song have become more dramatic when chorus breaks and Adele’s voice jumps an octave. This song is notably relaxing as it allows you to cry good tears when you feel stressed out.

The other following songs are recommended by Jacob Jolij, a scientist and cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Groningen. Jolij and the Alba, British electronics brand, had investigated songs that improve moods. Songs are very personal while music is linked with memory and emotion. Based on Jolij research, key criteria of ‘feel-good’ songs should have a lyrical theme, musical key, and a tempo. And here are top tunes recommended by the research.

Don’t stop me now by Queen

Living on a Prayer by Jon Bon Jovi

I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor

Walking on Sunshine by Katrina & the Waves
